A matcha-caffeinated girl’s diary thoughts on all things books, reading, and writing.

My name is Christyna Yang and I am a reader at heart and an aspiring writer.

About YOU

Do you spend too much money on books?
Do you have a to-read pile that keeps growing?
Did you once love to read and now feel the soul-crushing reality of life has gotten in the way?
Are you just a person who fell in love with reading because you were socially awkward in high school?
Were books the only place you felt understood?
Did you learn random facts and even empathy from books?
Have you ever said, “I read it in a book once”.
Have you ever loved books more than anything? Even your new boyfriend?
Did you ever dream of having Belle’s library?
Have you ever read a book with such a crazy plot twist that you needed to tell the entire plot to whoever would listen?
Do you enjoy discussion because you have so many takes, but the best part is hearing someone else’s opinion that strikes you in awe?

Well, if you answered yes to even one question, then this is for you. Yes, you. Hey, maybe you should write a book blog too.

Why “Matcha & Motifs”?

You may be wondering why “Matcha & Motifs”? Well, it’s certainly not because every other book blog name I came up with was taken.

But because, I love matcha. Specifically, matcha lattes (extra sweet). I always drank them when writing or reading. I drank them a bunch while pursuing my English and Linguistics BA. It was very nice. So it’s kinda my thing, actually I’m sipping on one right now as I write this, 3/5.

My favorite literary device are motifs. Motifs are repeated element such as an image, word, or phrase that highlights main ideas of the work. They’re like small nuggets that can connect to a bigger theme. I like searching for these small but mighty eggs. It makes me believe that authors actually have underlying meanings in their works and it’s not just a literal story. I’d like to think that English teachers are actually onto something and we’re not over-analyzing and making random stuff up. Either way, it’s a win for me.

This is a journal of my reads, my thoughts and opinions as well as random stuff shared on the vast internet. Hence, a book blog.

Just a girl chasing a dream, and if you want you can witness me accomplish them. In return, I hope to encourage you to chase yours.

Matcha & Motifs Rating System

1/5 No way a book can be this bad, but it is.

2/5 It has a smidge of something to like.

3/5 It was okay. Not a disappointment, but not impressive either.

4/5 I really liked it, solid read.

5/5 Immediately recommend and will love, cherish, and most likely reread forever.

After countless chats with my book buddies, I learned I am an easy rater (Which I thought I wasn’t). It could just be that I have a soft spot for romantasy, and I like the things I like (duh), so I rate them highly. I already enjoy *insert genre*, so any good renditions of it will probably fill my cup. It feels easy to love.

And if love was something to give,
I would
be a loose knot,
something that gives easily.

Anyway, all I’m saying is that I’ve never read books for pure literature. Of course, I’ve grown to appreciate and even enjoy them, but my true love will always be escapism. Ah yes, the woes of loving something I will truly never have: a classic tragedy. It doesn’t need to be a work of art for me to rate it a 5; I just have to really love it. And so, my ratings are completely biased. Cheers!
